Nokia 3710 Fold Review

Nokia 3710 Fold HandsetThe fold phone seems to have lost favour with the major with the major mobile manufacturer. From the days of the Motorola Star Tac and V series, the mobile buying public has always had an affinity with the fold, or clamshell design. And you can see why, fold phones are very often small and compact, yet with a sizeable display and keypad available. But for some reason, manufacturers started to prefer the slide design, which also offers a large enough display, but not necessarily as good a keypad.

Just recently, we’ve seen a return to favour for clamshell devices, and in the main this has come from the manufacturer who initially decided that such a design was ‘just a fad’ and not worth time investing in. When the Star Tac reigned, it wasn’t because of its features, and at the time Nokia were streets ahead in popularity. If only, it would be said, Nokia could bring their technology and usability to a clamshell phone.

And now Nokia have a fair old line up of clamshell devices to choose from, and the latest addition to that line-up is the Nokia 3710 Fold. Available in either black, pink or purple the 3710 fold is very pocketable, weighing in at just 94g and when closed, measuring just 15.2mm thick. The inside display is a very acceptable 2.2 inch QVGA TFT screen, supporting up to 16 million colours. The outer display is a monochrome TFT screen, measuring 128 x 160 pixels.

Feature wise, this device is solid, if a little unspectacular, but don’t be fooled. There is enough underneath to keep most average phone users happy. Let’s start with the first, the surprising inclusion of a GPS receiver with aGPS support included. The 3710 Fold will work with Nokia Maps for S40 devices, and will also operate on the java version of Google Maps.

Nokia 3710 Fold

The camera on the device is 3.2 Megapixel, with an LED flash, and will also record video clips at 15 fps. There is also an external front-facing video camera available, because the Nokia 3710 Fold is also a 3G compatible device, supporting video calls. 3G is the highest data speed available, there is neither WiFi nor HSDPA, but when using third party browsers such as Opera Mini over 3G, the speeds delivered are usually pretty impressive.

There is an audio jack included on the device, but this is disappointingly a 2.5mm jack, so if you wish to use your own preferred headphones you are going to need an adaptor. Complete with Stereo FM radio, the handset also has a fully featured music player. No surprises here, the music player is commonly found on most S40 devices. Music can be arranged in various ways, either by album, artist, composer, or also via your own created playlists. Whilst you need a headset plugged in for the radio to work, the 3710 Fold will operate over Bluetooth 2.0 which incorporates A2DP support, so you can listen to your music in stereo with a wireless headset.

Internal memory is acceptable, with up to 70MB available to the end user, and this can be expanded by up to 8GB with the addition of a Micro SD memory card, offering room for hundreds of music tracks, videos and images.

The Nokia 3710 Fold isn’t going to hit the headlines for any reason in particular, it is a fairly unassuming device overall, but it does come with a healthy feature set, with the inclusion of GPS a real surprise. Coupled with the form factor, it is imaginable that Nokia once again will have a strong selling mid range handset in their portfolio. Release date Q4 2009.
